For Daniel Terry, the 2026 season represents much more than another year of high school football. After transferring from Wiregrass Ranch to Gaither High School this offseason, Terry entered his junior campaign with a fresh opportunity, a new group of playmakers around him and plenty to prove.
It took just one game for him to make a statement.
In Gaither’s dominant 56-0 season-opening victory over Blake, Terry was nearly flawless. The junior quarterback completed 11 of 14 passes for 235 yards and five touchdowns, while adding another touchdown on the ground. That’s six total touchdowns in his first regular-season game wearing a Cowboys uniform.
Even more impressive was how quickly Terry did his damage. Gaither jumped on Blake early, allowing Terry to spend much of the night on the sideline after the game was already well in hand. He spread the football around to a talented collection of receivers and showed the command, accuracy and playmaking ability that made his offseason move to Gaither so intriguing.
The performance also picked up right where Terry left off last season at Wiregrass Ranch. As a sophomore, he threw for 2,578 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding 364 rushing yards and eight more scores, accounting for 31 total touchdowns. He even closed the year with a monster playoff performance, throwing for 382 yards and six touchdowns in an overtime battle against Palmetto.
Now he’s doing it in a new uniform.
Changing programs comes with challenges — new terminology, new coaches, new teammates and an entirely different chemistry to develop. But Terry’s debut showed just how quickly he’s becoming comfortable with the weapons around him. Seven different Cowboys caught passes in the opener, giving Terry the type of supporting cast that can make this offense extremely difficult to defend as the season progresses.
That’s what makes his junior season so intriguing.
Terry already proved he could produce at a high level as a sophomore. Now he has an opportunity to show that production can translate to a new program while competing against some of the top teams in the Tampa Bay area.
His recruitment is beginning to reflect that potential as well. Terry told the Tampa Bay Beacons that he currently holds around a dozen college offers, but he’s entering the season determined to prove that his recruitment should be much bigger.
A six-touchdown debut is certainly one way to start.
There’s a long season ahead and much tougher tests are coming, but Terry couldn’t have asked for a much stronger introduction to his new program.
New school. New weapons. Six touchdowns in Game 1.
If his Gaither debut is any indication, Daniel Terry could be headed toward a major junior season.
