St. Petersburg Catholic has plenty of explosive weapons, but senior running back Larry Christian III has become an important piece of what makes the Barons so difficult to defend. The 5-foot-11, 200-plus-pound back brings toughness and consistency to the ground game, forcing defenses to respect what SPC can do between the tackles while helping create opportunities throughout the rest of the offense.
Christian is coming off a junior season in which he rushed for 670 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he has started his senior year strong. Through the first two games, he is averaging nearly 140 rushing yards per game with four touchdowns, highlighted by a 152-yard, three-touchdown performance against Gibbs. His ability to fight through contact and pick up tough yards has given the Barons a dependable option when they need to move the chains.
His impact also extends beyond traditional carries. Christian can contribute in the passing game on screens and checkdowns, giving Chase Burrill another option when defenses bring pressure or take away the deeper routes. Once Christian gets the football in space, his size and physical running style can turn a short completion into additional yardage. He also contributes as a blocker, adding another valuable element to his role in the offense.
The attention Christian demands in the backfield helps create opportunities for SPC’s passing attack. Defenses that commit additional bodies toward containing the run can leave Burrill with favorable matchups for a talented receiving corps featuring Shrodderick Pritchett Jr., Elijah Shorter, Davion Jackson and other weapons. That balance gives the Barons the ability to adjust based on how opponents choose to defend them.
Christian has also generated significant college attention, with multiple Division I opportunities already in the picture. As his senior season continues, his combination of production and versatility gives college staffs plenty to evaluate. If he continues performing consistently against a schedule that includes Lennard, Clearwater Central Catholic, Zephyrhills Christian, Northside Christian, Alonso and Carrollwood Day, his recruitment has an opportunity to continue growing.
For Preps Next, Christian is a back worth keeping a close eye on. He runs with toughness, contributes in multiple areas and has become an important part of an SPC offense with championship expectations. With college programs already paying attention, a strong senior campaign could push his recruitment and stock even higher.
