Wake Forest commit Carl Jones Jr. has established himself as one of Central Florida’s premier defensive backs, and Friday night will give the Tampa Catholic standout another opportunity to prove it against a talented St. Petersburg Catholic offense.

The Tampa Catholic standout has established himself as one of the top defensive prospects in the area, combining speed, instincts and impressive ball skills with an ability to make life difficult for virtually any receiver who lines up across from him. After recording 32 tackles, 16 pass breakups and three interceptions as a junior, Jones has proven he can do more than simply stay with receivers — he consistently finds ways to disrupt the passing game.

His ability to break on the football is one of the strongest parts of his game. Jones has shown a knack for getting his hands into passing lanes, breaking up throws at the catch point and turning mistakes into interceptions when quarterbacks challenge him. His combination of recovery speed and anticipation makes completing passes in his direction a difficult assignment.

A potential Jones-Pritchett matchup immediately becomes one of the more intriguing individual battles of the night — a proven 1,000-yard receiver against a Wake Forest committed defensive back who has built his reputation making things uncomfortable for opposing pass catchers.

But Pritchett won’t be the only challenge.

SPC possesses speed throughout its receiving corps, a quarterback capable of pushing the football downfield and a strong rushing attack that can force defensive backs to become involved near the line of scrimmage. For Jones, that means Friday could test the complete defensive back — covering vertically, making plays on the football and coming downhill to make tackles when the run reaches the secondary.
